حينما‏ ‏صدر‏ ‏المرسوم‏ ‏الملكي‏ ‏باعتماد‏ ‏الجنيه‏ ‏المصري‏ ‏في‏ ‏يوم‏ 4 ‏يوليو 1924، ‏تساءل‏ ‏المصريون ‏عن‏ ‏الصورة‏ ‏التي‏ ‏طبعت‏ ‏عليه‏‏، فلم‏ ‏تكن‏ ‏تخص‏ ‏سلطانًا عثمانيًا‏ ‏ولا زعيمًا ثوريًا‏، ولا حتى صورة الملك الذي نصب على عرش بلادهم،  وإنما صورة‏ ‏لفلاح ‏‏مصري‏ ‏يحمل‏ ‏سمرة‏ ‏الجنوب‏‏ وتغطي لحيته‏ ‏البيضاء‏ ‏المتناثر‏ ‏فيها‏ ‏السواد ‏‏الجزء‏ ‏الأكبر‏ ‏من‏ ‏وجهه‏، فيما تغطي‏ ‏التجاعيد‏ ‏الجزء‏ ‏المتبقي منها،‏ ‏وعلي‏ ‏رأسه‏ ‏عمامة‏‏ ‏وفي‏ ‏عينيه‏ ‏نظرة‏ ‏رضا، وعلي‏ ‏كتفه‏ ‏عباءة‏ ‏بسيطة‏، ‏وهذا‏ ‏ما أثار حيرة‏ ‏الناس‏ وتساؤلاتهم عن الرجل الذي انضم لمصاف الملوك والسلاطين بوضع صورته على عملة بلادهم.
الإجابة‏‏ ‏كانت‏ ‏في‏ ‏ميناء‏ ‏إيطاليا‏ ‏علي‏ ‏تلك‏ ‏السفينة‏ ‏التي‏ ‏استقلها ‏الأمير‏‏ ‏«فؤاد‏» ‏والذي‏ ‏كان‏ ‏مسافرا‏ ‏في‏ ‏أدني‏ ‏درجة‏ ‏بعد‏ ‏أن‏ ‏فقد‏ ‏كل‏ ‏ما يملك‏ ‏وأفلت‏ ‏من‏ ‏ديون‏ ‏القمار‏ ‏وبجانبه‏ ‏ذلك‏ ‏الرجل‏ ‏‏الخادم‏ ‏له‏ ‏منذ‏ ‏عشرين‏ ‏عامًا‏ ‏والذي‏ اعتاد أن ‏يرحل‏ ‏معه ويرتحل‏‏ ‏أينما‏ ‏ذهب‏.. ‏إنه‏ عم إدريس، فلاح بسيط تعود أصوله إلى مدينة الأقصر.
بدأت القصة طبقًا لموقع الملك فاروق، حين نهض إدريس‏‏ ‏من‏ ‏نومه‏ ‏علي‏ ‏حلم‏‏ ‏هرع ليقصه‏ ‏علي‏ ‏مولاه‏ ‏الأمير، يتعلق باعتلاء الأمير عرش مصر، وأنه أصبح ملكًا، ‏هنا توقف فؤاد لبرهة، واعتلت وجهه نظرة دهشة، ولكنه سرعان مار رد على خادمه بابتسامه ساذجة، بعدما جالت بذهنه ‏صورة‏ ‏السلطان‏ ‏المريض‏ ‏في‏ ‏مصر‏، و‏تذكر‏ ‏أن‏ ‏للسلطان‏ ‏وريثًا، وهو أخوه الأكبر كمال الدين،‏ ‏كما‏ ‏أنه‏ ‏يوجد‏ ‏في‏ ‏أسرة‏ ‏محمد‏ ‏علي‏ ‏من‏ ‏هو‏ ‏أولي‏ ‏منه بالعرش‏‏، ‏كما‏ ‏أنه‏ ‏عاجز‏ ‏عن‏ ‏حكم‏ ‏بلد‏ ‏لايعرف‏ ‏فيها‏ ‏أي‏ ‏شيء‏ ‏حتي‏ ‏أنه‏ ‏لايستطيع‏ ‏النطق‏ ‏بلغته‏ وأيقن أن ما رآه الخادم ليس سوى أضغاث أحلام بعيدة المنال.

‏استمر‏ ‏إدريس‏ ‏يكرر‏ ‏حلمه‏ ‏علي‏ ‏الأمير‏ ‏مؤكدا‏ ‏أنه‏ ‏رآه‏ ‏يجلس‏ ‏علي‏ ‏عرش‏ ‏مصر‏ ‏في‏ ‏قصر‏ ‏عابدين‏، والجميع‏ ‏ينحني‏ ‏له‏ ‏لكن‏ ‏فؤاد‏ ‏زجره‏ ‏وقال‏ ‏له :‏ «‏اصمت‏ ‏فأنت‏ ‏مجنون‏ ‏وحلمك‏ ‏مثلك‏»، ‏لكن‏ ‏ ‏حدث‏ ‏مالم‏ ‏يتوقعه‏ ‏الأمير‏ ‏فقد‏ ‏تنازل‏ ‏الوريث‏ ‏كمال‏ ‏الدين‏ ‏عن‏ ‏عرش‏ ‏أبيه‏ ‏السلطان‏ ‏حسين‏ ‏كامل‏ ‏بعد‏ ‏أن‏ ‏بعث‏ ‏إليه وثيقة‏ ‏يطلب‏ ‏فيها‏ ‏إعفاءه‏ ‏من‏ ‏حكم‏ ‏مصر‏ ‏لأنه‏ ‏يكره‏ ‏هذا‏ ‏العرش‏ ‏الساذج‏ ‏الوهن‏، الذي‏ ‏يسيطر‏ ‏عليه‏ ‏الإنجليز‏ ‏ويحتقره‏ ‏الشعب‏، ‏ورجع‏ ‏السلطان‏ ‏إلي‏ ‏رغبة‏ ‏ابنه‏ ‏وتنازل‏ ‏الوريث‏ ‏عن‏ ‏حكم‏ ‏مصر‏.

‏بعد‏ ‏وقت‏ ‏غير‏ ‏قليل‏ هبطت‏ ‏السفينة‏ ‏الحاملة‏ ‏للأمير‏ ‏فؤاد‏ ‏وخادمه‏ ‏إدريس‏ ‏إلي‏ ‏ميناء‏ ‏الإسكندرية‏، فجأة‏ سمعا‏ ‏حامل‏ ‏الجرائد‏ ‏وهو‏ ‏يصيح «إقرأ‏ ‏خبر‏ ‏الأمير‏ ‏كمال‏ ‏الدين‏ ‏يتنازل‏ ‏عن‏ ‏عرش‏ ‏مصر» هنا‏ ‏اندهش‏ ‏فؤاد‏، ‏وقرأ‏ إدريس‏ ‏الخبر‏ ‏ولكن‏ ‏ذلك‏ ‏لم‏ ‏يغير‏ ‏من‏ ‏الأمير‏ ‏شيئا‏ فهناك‏ ‏من‏ ‏يرث‏ ‏العرش‏ ‏كالأمير‏ ‏عبد‏ ‏المنعم‏ ‏بن‏ ‏الخديوي‏ ‏عباس‏، غير عالم بأن‏ ‏الأمير‏ ‏عبد‏ ‏المنعم‏ ‏قد‏ ‏رفضه‏ ‏الإنجليز‏ ‏واعترضوا‏ ‏علي‏ ‏توليته‏ ‏عرش‏ ‏مصر‏ ‏ولم‏ ‏يكن‏ ‏يعرف‏ ‏أن‏ ‏الأمير‏ ‏كمال‏ ‏الدين‏ ‏قد‏ ‏هاجر‏ ‏هو‏ ‏وزوجته‏ ‏إلي‏ ‏فرنسا‏ ‏تاركًا‏ ‏كل‏ ‏ذلك، ‏وظل‏ ‏بعيدًا‏ ‏عن‏ ‏الأحداث‏ حتي‏ ‏فوجيء‏ ‏بدعوة‏ ‏لمقابلة‏ ‏المستر‏ ‏وينجت‏ ‏المندوب‏ ‏السامي‏ ‏الحاكم‏ ‏الحقيقي‏ لمصر‏، ‏ولبي‏ ‏فؤاد‏ ‏دعوة‏ ‏اللورد‏ الذي فاجئه ‏بأنه‏ ‏تم‏ ‏اختياره‏ ‏ليكون‏ ‏ملك‏ ‏مصر‏ ‏بعد‏ ‏أن‏ ‏يموت‏ ‏السلطان‏ ‏حسين‏ ‏كامل‏ ‏وأمره‏، بألا‏ ‏يبلغ‏ ‏أحدًا‏ ‏بذلك‏ ‏وأصاب‏ ‏فؤاد‏ ‏ذهولًا‏ ‏طويلا‏ ‏حتي‏ إذا ما وصل إلى‏ ‏بيته‏ ‏فوجد‏ ‏إدريس‏‏ ‏فابتسم‏ ‏إليه‏ ‏وقال‏ ‏له‏ ‏انهض‏ ‏يا‏ ‏إدريس‏ ‏بك‏ ‏واستغرب‏ ‏إدريس‏ ‏من‏ ‏ذلك‏ ‏فلم‏ ‏يعط‏ ‏الرتب‏ ‏والألقاب‏ ‏غير‏ صاحب‏ ‏الجلالة‏ ‏الملك‏ ، فكرر‏ ‏فؤاد‏ ‏عليه‏ ‏وقال‏ ‏له‏ ‏لقد‏ ‏تحقق‏ ‏حلمك‏، ‏وأصبحت‏ ‏ملك‏ مصر‏ ‏وستكون‏ ‏صورتك‏ ‏علي‏ ‏أول‏ ‏جنيه‏ ‏تصدره‏ ‏حكومتي‏، وظهر‏ يحمل‏ ‏صورة‏ ‏إدريس‏ ‏وسمي‏ ‏بجنيه‏ ‏إدريس‏ ‏في‏ ‏يوم‏ 4 ‏يوليو‏ 1924.
رواية ثانية
تعددت الروايات حول القصة الخلفية التي جمعت «إدريس» بالأمير فؤاد، وكانت سببًا في ظهور صورة الفلاح البسيط، ولكنها وإن اختلفت حول التفاصيل، فإنها جميعًا اتفقت على أن إدريس هو أول من بشر فؤاد بحكم مصر، ففي رواية ثانية نشرتها صفحة الملك فاروق، يذكر أن الللقاء بين إدريس والأمير فؤاد، كان في إحدى الحفلات التى اعتاد أن يقيمها علية القوم فى مصر، وإليها أحضر إدريس الفلاح الأقصري البسيط، ليس كمدعو بل «كنمرة»، لتسلية الحاضرين الذي كان من بينهم أحد أمراء الأسرة العلوية، وهو الأمير فؤاد ( 26 مارس 1868 – 28 أبريل 1936)، ذلك أن عم إدريس الذي لم يكن يمهر بالقراءة أو الكتابة كانت لديه مهارة أخرى، ألا وهي قراءة الكف والتبشير بالطالع، والإخبار عن الحاضر والمستقبل.
فى الحفل تقابل عم إدريس مع «فؤاد» وكان وقتها لايزاال أميرًا في البلاط الملكي،  قرأ لك الكف وأخبره بأن طالعه ينبأ بأنه سيكون ملكا على مصر و السودان، فابتهج الأمير و أستبشر بقارئ الكف العجوز و أخبره و هو يضحك بأنه إذا حكم مصر سيضع صورة الفلاح إدريس على الجنيه، حيث كان يرى أن ما أطلعه عليه الفلاح البسيط ليس إلا حلم بعيد المنال، إن لم يكن مستحيلًا.

تتوالي الأحداث على الساحة السياسية، ويموت السلطان حسين كامل عام 1917، وكان من المفترض أن يتولى ابنه كمال الدين حسين العرش خلفاً لوالده إلا أن السلطات البريطانية كانت تعمل خلف الكواليس وتبحث عمن يخضع لمطالبها ويوافق أهوائها، وتحركه كما تشاء، ومن ثم دفعت بالأخ الأصغر لكمال الدين وهو الأمير فؤاد إلى الحكم، ونصبته سلطانًا متجاوزًا بذلك أعراف التوريث الملكية، وذلك لعلمها بما يضمره له المصريون من كراهية وعدم تمتعه بشعبية حيث كان يتكلم الايطالية أفضل من العربية وعاش طفولته وصباه في إيطاليا.
كان أول ما فعله السلطان الجديد، هو دراسة المؤثرات التي تحكم المشهد السياسي، وعمل حثيثًا على توهين التدخل الأجنبي في مصر، مع الإبقاء على علاقة طيبة بالسلطات البريطانية، من ناحية ومساندة القوى الوطنية المطالبة باستقلال مصر ورفع الحماية البريطانية عنها من ناحية أخرى، وهو ما تحقق ظاهريًا بإصدار بريطانيا تصريح 28 فبراير لعام 1922 الذي أعلنت فيه استقلال مصر مع العديد من التحفظات التى تحكم من خلالها سيطرتها على مصر والسودان وتستطيع من خلالها التدخل فى شئون مصر، حينها أمر «فؤاد» بتغيير لقبه من السلطان إلى الملك.

لم تحل السنة الثالثة إلا وقد أمر الملك فؤاد بتحقيق أمر بتغيير لقبه من السلطان إلى الملك بعدما كما أمر في يوليو 1924 بوضع صورة عم إدريس على الجنيه المصري، ليصبح الفلاح الأقصري، هو أول شخصية مصرية تطبع صورتها على العملة الورقية،  ويستحيل ما أطلق عليه اسم  «جنيه الفلاح»،  أندر وأغلى عملة مصرية، وحلم العثور عليها يراود كل هواة جمع العملات القديمة.
رواية ثالثة
وثمة رواية ثالثة تشير إلى أن إدريس الاقصري كان يعمل في معية الأمير فؤاد وقال له ذات يوم «أبشر لقد حلمت  بأنك ستكون ملك مصر وستلبس التاج وتجلس على العرش» .
هنا نهض الامير فؤاد وضحك ووعد إدريس خيرًا أن تحقق حلمه، ولما تحقق حلم إدريس أفندي الاقصرى، بتدخل السلطات البريطانية، كافأه الملك فؤاد «أعظم مكافأة» بأن وضع صورته على أول جنيه مصري من العملة الورقية يطبع باسم المملكة، والذي عرف بـ «جنيه إدريس أفندي» وزيادة على ذلك التخليد منحه لقب الباكوية وأصبح إدريس بك.

رواية رابعة
وتوضح رواية رابعة طبيعة عمل عم إدريس، وتشير إلى أن صاحب الوجه الذي ظهر على الجنيه إنما هو البستانى الذي كان يعمل بقصر السلطان فؤاد و ذات ليله وهو نائم رأى رؤيه وهى أن السلطان فؤاد سيصبح ملكا على مصر ، وفى الصباح قص الرؤيه على السلطان فؤاد الذى وعده بوضع صورته على الجنيه إذا تحققت رؤيته، وهو ما تحقق.
